How His Power Empowers

Why Christians Aren’t Wimps

Christians are not supposed to be wimps. We’re supposed to have confidence in God to exert power. But here’s the thing, we need to exert His power.

Life is all about power for so many people. So I looked up the definition of power in the dictionary. Lexico.com defines it six different ways:

  1. the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality.
  2. the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.
  3. physical strength and force exerted by something or someone.
  4. energy that is produced by mechanical, electrical, or other means and used to operate a device.
  5. the time-rate of doing work, measured in watts or less frequently horsepower.
  6. the number of times a certain number is to be multiplied by itself.

The one that I’m talking about is No. 2, “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.”

Who wouldn’t like to be able to do that? So I’ve started thinking about it and chewing on it. What does it really mean? What is power? What is the best use of power? How can I actually have power? There’s a lot of talk about power in the Bible:

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

(I Cor. 4:20 NIV)

This is one of 335 times the word power is used in the Bible.

Christians Aren’t Wimps

Is power of our own regard? Is it something that’s innate to being a human being? Yes, we conjure up power. We can try and look powerful. Big people look more powerful than little people. We can try and be powerful by being louder, more certain, smarter, or wiser.

But that’s not the biblical idea of power. When you think back to the beginning of church, God’s word came not in just words, but in power. When Jesus came to the earth, he came in humility and power.

For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

(2 Tim. 1:7 NIV)

Christians are not supposed to be wimps. We’re supposed to have confidence in God to exert power. But here’s the thing, we need to exert His power.

…‘for my power is made perfect in weakness.’

(2 Cor. 12:9 NIV)

It’s through our own weaknesses that God wants to exhibit his power, which we can see further in the following scripture quotes:

And he became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him.

(Sam. 5:10 NIV)

And David became more and more powerful because the Lord Almighty was with him.

(1 Chron. 11:9 NIV)

Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand.

(Psalm 20:6 NIV)

Jotham grew powerful because he walked steadfastly before the Lord his God.

(2 Chron. 27:6 NIV)

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

(Job 9:4 NIV)

I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal.

(Job 27:11 NIV)

You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!

(Psalm 68:35 NIV)
